Today was one of our annual Christmas events, having pancakes with Priscilla the Pig at Macy’s. If you’re not from Atlanta, let me assure you, I’m not crazy. Yes, our Macy’s has a pig for a Christmas mascot. In fact, more specifically, she’s a pink pig named Priscilla. (Don’t worry, it’s a costume thing, not some potbellied farm animal us Southerners parade around while singing carols!) Priscilla the Pig was “born” over 50 years ago, and now, decades later, it’s an Atlanta tradition for children to ride the Priscilla the Pig train located at the top of Lenox Mall each Christmas. Overall the ride is very mid-century feeling (not much has changed in the way of decor!), very pink (seriously, everywhere you look) and a must-do for all Georgians. Did I mention that the train itself is pig-themed? I suppose in thinking about it, it might seem like a rather odd thing to an outsider. ;)
This was our second annual Pancakes with Priscilla Day, where my mother takes all of us down to Lenox for a special, limited-seat event. Priscilla herself is there for some special one-on-one time, faces are painted, balloon pigs are abundant (E.V. popped hers…oops), a special meal is served–and, of course, we get to go on a private train ride. Since this is an annual tradition, my mind can’t help but compare: Last year Emma Vance was such a tiny little thing; I mean, she wasn’t even eating solids at that point! Oh, how quickly things change! This year, she stuffed her face with eggs, attempted to eat a gummy pig, danced nervously in front of Priscilla herself, ran rampant in the gift shop and tried her hardest to go for a second ride around the track. As we chased her around, I couldn’t help but look into the future a bit: Next year we’ll have two little girls riding on that pig train! Yay! :)
